In addition\, there will be tours of the Graffiti House’s Civil War graffiti\, treats and sharing ghost stories by a campfire.

DESCRIPTION:Over sixty-five names still cover the walls of the Graffiti House in Brandy Station Civil War soldiers’ handwriting left behind more than 160 years ago\, saying “I was here.” Join Cheryl Kay Johnson for “Whispers in the Wallpaper\,” a family-friendly ghost tour walking the same stairs and rooms where Civil War soldiers once wrote their names and where visitors and volunteers still hear things today. Cheryl uses her storytelling ability to make history come alive\, honoring the individuals who came before us. For Cheryl\, every ghost story has a historical energy waiting to be shared. She also conducts ghost tours in Charlottesville and Staunton. Refreshments will be provided. Recommended for ages 12 and above. The tours on October 10th and 17th are each limited to 15. Jim Bish shares the remarkable stories behind some of the area’s most significant historic sites\, including: George Washington’s early surveying work on Carrico Mills Road\, Historic Carolina Road and General Anthony Wayne’s bivouac\, Dinosaur track site at Luck Stone\, Salubria and the Rev. John Thompson historical marker\, Ancient Jasper Site\, Great Fork Church of England site and Downman Tomb\, Robert Slaughter’s La Grange and Lafayette’s encampment\, Madden’s Tavern and the USCT Murders\, Kelly’s Ford and its connections to the Field family and the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery. and the United States Colored Troops’ crossing of the Rappahannock River. Whether you’re a Civil War enthusiast\, local history buff\, or simply enjoy discovering Virginia’s hidden stories\, this tour offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the Commonwealth’s most historic landscapes. There are two tours: a Morning Tour from 9-11 AM and an Afternoon Tour from 1-3 PM.

SUMMARY:Highlights of Culpeper History: from Surveyor George Washington to the Field Brothers marker at Kelly's Ford.
DESCRIPTION:Lecture/tour on step-van led by Jim Bish beginning and ending at the Graffiti House\, 19484 Brandy Road\, Brandy Station. Pre-registration required at https://www.brandystationfoundation.com. Planned stops will be the site of George Washington’s first survey and how Washington ended up as the youngest surveyor in Virginia’s history ; a drive-by historic Salubria and then on to the Great Fork Church site of the 1730s\, Lafayette Troop camp in 1781\, Madden’s Tavern of the 1840s\, and the murder of the three United States Colored Troops in May 1864. Lastly\, the Brandy Station Foundation site at Kelly’s Ford and the newly installed Field Brothers marker at that location tells about the importance of the Field Family including Joseph and Reuben who would eventually join up with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Tour leader Jim Bish spent more than 30 years teaching American and Virginia History in Prince William County\, Virginia and spent two years as an educator at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. He served Prince William County as a member of the Historical Commission\, owns History Happened Here Tours\, and volunteers with the National Museum of Americans in Wartime. Jim currently is on the Board of Directors of Historic Prince William\, Historic Dumfries\, The Museum of Culpeper History\, is President of the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter\, VASSAR\, and founded the Culpeper County\, Virginia Cemetery Project.
