Historic Salubria is a c. 1757 historic home that serves as a unique backdrop for engagement\, maternity\, family portraits\, and other types of photoshoots\, located just outside of Culpeper\, Virginia.\nThe house sits on a hilltop overlooking the Blue Ridge in Stevensburg\, Virginia\, in the midst of grounds adorned by stately\, old trees and a charming boxwood ring. The unfinished\, unfurnished interior features original\, elaborate wood paneling and moody architectural features\, while its lack of furniture provides for a blank canvas.\nWe would love to have you out to Salubria on April 29 to take a tour and learn more about this unique venue for your photoshoots. Light refreshments will be served\, and Historic Germanna staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about a photoshoot at Salubria. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the American Battlefield Trust’s nationwide annual cleanup day!\nA variety of indoor and outdoor activities will be available\, including:\n-Cleaning up the Salubria Community Cemetery (cleaning headstones\, clearing brush\, picking up deadfall\, cutting back saplings)\n-Repairing the split-rail fence (digging holes\, inserting fence posts)\n-Tidying up outside the house (picking up deadfall\, raking leaves)\n-Tidying up inside the house (sweeping\, dusting)\n-And more!\nVolunteers will be treated to a special behind-the-scenes tour with staff.\nWe have some tools available\, but if you have your own\, bring it! We will be using clippers\, post diggers\, saws\, axes\, hatchets\, loppers\, brooms\, rakes\, dusters\, and shovels. Volunteers should also bring gloves and any other protective gear. Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) are native wildflowers that are ephemeral. They emerge in early spring and after blooming\, disappear without a trace until the following spring. Bluebells spread through rhizomes and self seeding\, and prefer moist shady habitats like forested floodplains along rivers and streams. They first emerge as purple foliage which turns to bright green as purple buds unfurl into the unmistakable blue flowers that carpet the forest for several weeks. \nWe will be searching for other signs of spring along the way\, covering approximately 3 miles. Meet at the Historic Germanna Visitor Center. Our walk along the Rapidan River is followed by a moderate climb to a rock outcropping that provides an excellent view of the Rapidan River and surrounding forest. DESCRIPTION:Join Historic Germanna as we partake in the nationwide cleanup of historic sites and battlefields by sprucing up Historic Salubria and its grounds. \nA variety of indoor and outdoor activities will be available\, including:\n-Cleaning up the Salubria Community Cemetery (clearing brush\, picking up deadfall\, cutting back saplings)\n-Repairing the split-rail fence (digging holes\, inserting fence posts)\n-Tidying up outside the house (picking up deadfall\, raking leaves)\n-Tidying up inside the house (sweeping\, dusting) \nAll participants will be treated to a special\, behind-the-scenes tour of Salubria with Historic Germanna staff. \nVolunteers should meet at the parking area beside Historic Salubria. Follow the gravel driveway through the gate\, and park near the modern cottage. We will convene near there. \nWe have some tools available\, but if you have your own\, bring it! We will be using clippers\, loppers\, brooms\, rakes\, dusters\, and shovels. Volunteers should also bring gloves and any other protective gear. Wear sturdy shoes\, long-sleeves and pants. \nIn case of inclement weather\, Park Day will be moved to Saturday May 3.

SUMMARY:Archaeology in Action at Historic Germanna - Public Dig Day
DESCRIPTION:Historic Germanna is once again excited to invite the public to see archaeology in action! On Saturday\, August 3\, 2024\, from 10am to 4pm\, our unique archaeological dig sites in Locust Grove will be open to the public. Get behind the scenes and meet Germanna’s archaeology team to learn more about this summer’s work in the field\, including efforts to unearth the original Spotsylvania Courthouse. This is the last opportunity this year to visit our excavation site\, which is only open a few times a season. \nGermanna’s archaeology site encompasses the ruins of the “Enchanted Castle” – home of Virginia’s Colonial-era Governor\, Alexander Spotswood – as well as the potential sites of the 1714 Fort Germanna that was constructed by the first German immigrants to The New World and the original Spotsylvania Court House. \nAdmission is free\, but due to limited parking at the dig site\, guests will be provided timed access passes on a first come\, first served basis. Guests should check in at the Historic Germanna Visitor Center at 2062 Germanna Highway\, Locust Grove\, 22508. There\, you will receive a timed ticket to access the archaeology site. The last timed ticket will be given at 3:00pm. \nEvent rain or shine unless severe weather. SUMMARY:2024 Annual Historic Germanna Reunion & Conference
DESCRIPTION:The event kicks off with registration and Public Archaeology Day at the Fort Germanna Visitor Center. Participants can view archaeology work in progress\, interact with resident archaeologists\, and view interesting artifacts.\nThere will be a welcome event at the Culpeper History Museum and a 3rd Thursday Concert Series in downtown Culpeper\, Virginia.\nThe second day will feature guided Heritage Tours focusing on the 1714 First Colony or the 1717 Second Colony. The evening will include a banquet and silent auction at the Lake of the Woods Club House.\nParticipants can also enjoy VIP tours of Salubria\, a Georgian-style historic property\, and a festive Oktoberfest at the Old House Winery.\nThe third day will have a Historical and Genealogical Conference with various speaker sessions\, including discussions on preservation\, DNA in genealogy\, and Historic Germanna’s strategic plan. This event will be held at The Refinery in Downtown Culpeper. There is a large parking area adjacent to the venue. You can order a box lunch or you can explore the many lunch options within a few blocks in Culpeper’s vibrant downtown.\nThe final day will involve a worship service at Hebron Lutheran Church followed by a Sunday Southern Church lunch\, and updates on the Hebron Church 1740 beam restoration.\n\n\n\n
