This event introduces participants to the religious and cultural life of colonial Virginia\, showing how churches\, clergy\, and communities were part of everyday life. Step into the social and spiritual world of Revolutionary-era Virginians as you share a colonial-style picnic supper inspired by eighteenth-century Virginia\, while historical interpreters portray clergy from several Christian traditions active during the Revolutionary era. Along the church’s historic grounds and ADA-accessible interpretive trail\, temporary installations will introduce visitors to clergy figures and religious communities that shaped the religious landscape of colonial Virginia. \nFriday\, July 17\, 2026:\n9:00am-4:00pm: Before Religious Freedom: Faith Traditions in Revolutionary Virginia Symposium – Little Fork Episcopal Church (16461 Oak Shade Rd\, Rixeyville\, VA 22737) – As Little Fork Episcopal Church and our nation celebrates 250 years\, join distinguished speakers representing the Lutheran\, Episcopal\, Baptist\, and Presbyterian faiths as they discuss the history of American religion in 18th century Virginia — and its role in fomenting revolution by 1776. Scholars representing several Christian traditions present in colonial Virginia will interpret the roles their traditions played in the religious and political developments surrounding the American Revolution. DESCRIPTION:Join Historic Germanna as we partake in the nationwide cleanup of historic sites and battlefields by sprucing up Historic Salubria and its grounds. \nA variety of indoor and outdoor activities will be available\, including:\n-Cleaning up the Salubria Community Cemetery (clearing brush\, picking up deadfall\, cutting back saplings)\n-Repairing the split-rail fence (digging holes\, inserting fence posts)\n-Tidying up outside the house (picking up deadfall\, raking leaves)\n-Tidying up inside the house (sweeping\, dusting) \nAll participants will be treated to a special\, behind-the-scenes tour of Salubria with Historic Germanna staff. \nVolunteers should meet at the parking area beside Historic Salubria. Follow the gravel driveway through the gate\, and park near the modern cottage. We will convene near there. \nWe have some tools available\, but if you have your own\, bring it! We will be using clippers\, loppers\, brooms\, rakes\, dusters\, and shovels. Volunteers should also bring gloves and any other protective gear. Wear sturdy shoes\, long-sleeves and pants. \nIn case of inclement weather\, Park Day will be moved to Saturday May 3.

SUMMARY:Archaeology in Action at Historic Germanna - Public Dig Day
DESCRIPTION:Historic Germanna is once again excited to invite the public to see archaeology in action! On Saturday\, August 3\, 2024\, from 10am to 4pm\, our unique archaeological dig sites in Locust Grove will be open to the public. Get behind the scenes and meet Germanna’s archaeology team to learn more about this summer’s work in the field\, including efforts to unearth the original Spotsylvania Courthouse. This is the last opportunity this year to visit our excavation site\, which is only open a few times a season. \nGermanna’s archaeology site encompasses the ruins of the “Enchanted Castle” – home of Virginia’s Colonial-era Governor\, Alexander Spotswood – as well as the potential sites of the 1714 Fort Germanna that was constructed by the first German immigrants to The New World and the original Spotsylvania Court House. \nAdmission is free\, but due to limited parking at the dig site\, guests will be provided timed access passes on a first come\, first served basis. Guests should check in at the Historic Germanna Visitor Center at 2062 Germanna Highway\, Locust Grove\, 22508. There\, you will receive a timed ticket to access the archaeology site. The last timed ticket will be given at 3:00pm. \nEvent rain or shine unless severe weather.
